Truck Driver Airlifted after S.H.1 Crash

Truck Driver Airlifted after S.H.1 Crash

The Palmerston North based Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Ohingaiti, north of Hunterville, early this afternoon after an accident on S.H.1. The driver of the truck, a Feilding man in his 20's, suffered multiple injuries and was trapped in the vehicle for half an hour while local Fire Brigade members worked to extract him. The patient was stabilised at the scene by the on-board St John Ambulance Intensive Care Para-Medic before being airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital in a stable condition. It appears the truck has left the road at a bend and collided with a number of trees lining the Rangatira Golf course - coming to rest in the rough. Ladies playing the course at the time were first on the scene raising the alarm immediately and later commenting that they had often seen 'drivers' ending up in the rough - but not quite like this! The Rescue Helicopter was used owing to the time taken to extract the injured driver from the wreckage and the nature of his injuries.
