Conserve water in Akaroa

Conserve water in Akaroa

Christchurch City Council is reminding Akaroa residents and visitors to conserve water as supply levels drop.

Council staff are doing a letter box drop around the area today reminding people to be water wise and minimise wastage.

Water restrictions are already in place limiting people to hand-held hosing of their gardens only, but high demand and minimal rainfall has resulted in low water supply.

Acting City Water and Waste Unit Manager Tim Joyce says Akaroa stream flows are low and anticipated to drop further as the dry weather is likely to continue for the next two to three months.

“This will mean there is less water available for our treatment plants servicing Akaroa to process. A further drop in stream levels will mean residents need to monitor their water usage carefully.

“Please be mindful when using water – turn the tap off when you’re brushing your teeth, take shorter showers and where possible water your garden at cooler times of the day. We’re asking everyone to play their part and minimise individual water consumption.

“Council staff have also been around the area checking for water leaks and we’re asking people to contact us if they find any on public land and fix any on their own property.”
