Street collection a big win for the Wellington City Mission

Street collection a big win for the Wellington City Mission

The Wellington City Mission’s annual Street Day Appeal had aimed to raise $40,000 when it took place on December 5th. The Mission is pleased to report that, through the generous support of volunteers, donors and their business partners, they exceeded that target – with the total figure ending up at over $42,000.

On the day, The Mission enjoyed a strong collector presence around Greater Wellington. With around 450 collectors spread across 72 sites, this year’s collection total marks a 68% increase from last year.

Alongside a traditional bucket collection, The Mission was fortunate to be able to try some new aspects, which enabled people to give in a variety of ways. They introduced six ‘Donation Stations’ equipped with the latest Verifone eftpos machines supplied by EFTPOS New Zealand, and created a special Text line which instantly donated $3. Donors were also treated to ‘Santa Slabs’ chocolates as thanks, supplied by Whittaker’s. As part of the day, both the Samuel Marsden Collegiate Junior Girls’ and St. Paul’s Cathedral Choirs performed at Midland Park, and the eye-catching ‘Star Car’ turned heads and drew people in all day.

Wellington City Mission Chief Executive Officer Michelle Branney says: “The general public has made The Mission’s work with society’s most vulnerable possible. By giving monetary support, you ensure our vital social services are on hand for those who need them most.”

The Mission would like to thank all Wellingtonians who donated time, money or goods for the Street Day Appeal. The vital funds enable The Mission’s five key social services to help thousands of struggling individuals and families living in the Greater Wellington region through the holiday season.
