New lane on Auckland’s Northern Motorway
The latest addition to Auckland’s roading network has been opened this morning on the Northern Motorway (State Highway
1) between Upper Harbour Highway and Greville Road interchange.
From this morning, northbound traffic started using the newly completed additional motorway lane between Upper Harbour
Highway and Greville Road, as part of the a wider suite of improvements to accommodate the growth and ease access into
the Albany area.
This change follows the switching on of new traffic signals at the northbound off-ramp at the Greville Road interchange,
last Monday 8 December.
“We’re pleased to have the new lane open prior to the holiday rush, as it will help ease congestion on this busy section
of the motorway,” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Brett Gliddon.
“We do ask that people be careful driving through the area while they get used to the new layout, especially as
construction work continues in the area and more people are on the roads during the summer season.”
“It does remain a construction site so please slow down and drive with care,’ says Mr Gliddon.
The entire Upper Harbour Highway to Greville Road Northbound 3-laniing project is expected to be complete in April 2015.
In addition to the additional motorway lane and improved interchange at Greville Road, the project is also widening the
southbound lane on the Albany Expressway from 1 to 2 lanes and is providing a new shared walking and cycling path along
both Greville Road and the Albany Expressway.
