More central city parking for Christmas
People heading into the central city to shop and celebrate the festive season will find it easier to get a park, with nearly 400 new car parks available in the lead up to Christmas.
Christchurch Central Development Unit, Christchurch City Council and Wilson Parking have worked together to identify Crown-owned sites that are not currently required for construction that can be used for parking pre-Christmas.
It is expected that the additional car parking will match anticipated demand in the central city over the Christmas shopping period, says Christchurch Central Development Unit Director Warwick Isaacs.
“The shortage of car parks has been identified during regular meetings between Christchurch City Council and the Christchurch Central Development Unit and the two organisations have worked together to find a solution.”
“More businesses are returning to the central city and it’s important that people are able to access those businesses. More people in the city means more people visiting cafes and restaurants, creating a better economic and social environment for everyone.”
Christchurch City Council Unit Manager Transport and City Streets Richard Topham says it’s crucial that parking is available over the Christmas season to support the thriving shopping and hospitality destinations of Re:START, New Regent Street, High street and Victoria Street.
“It’s also really important that people heading into the central city over the festive season know where parking is available. So the Council has launched a new parking page on our website aimed at helping people find parks more easily in the central city.”
The parking page can be found at www.ccc.govt.nz/parking.
The land for the extra car parking is owned by the Crown and the car parks will be operated by either Wilson Parking or Christchurch City Council.
The new carparks are located at:
