45 member Beijing performance group at CPIT
China’s profile in Christchurch continues to grow with the Chinese Consulate in Christchurch set to welcome the largest
yet student cultural exchange group to Christchurch next week. The 45-member performance troupe from the China Youth
University For Political Studies visit Christchurch next week and will perform in a free concert at CPIT on Monday 8
December at 2pm to share some of their rich and colourful traditions.
The award winning performance troupe, which is accustomed to performing before huge crowds in Beijing, will present a
varied programme of traditional and more contemporary music and dance from the stringed erhu to a capella, ethnic dances
and hip hop.
The performance follows other high profile visits. Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel met with Mayoral delegations from
Christchurch’s Sister Cities of Wuhan and Gansu province as well as delegations from Guangzhou and Shenzhen last month.
Chinese President Xi Jinping was also in New Zealand last month. Among agreements signed between the two countries were
initiatives involving tertiary education, such as an arrangement on the mutual recognition of academic qualifications in
higher education and student exchange programmes.
The Chinese students will also perform at Christchurch Boy’s High, where Rewi Alley studied, and will take a day trip to
Lake Tekapo to experience New Zealand’s famous landscapes.
