The Selwyn Foundation names new independent living apartments in honour of the late Sir Paul Reeves

The Selwyn Foundation’s prestigious new five storey independent living apartment building at Selwyn Heights retirement village in Hillsborough was officially opened on Friday, 21 November, and named the ‘Reeves Apartments’, in honour of the late Right Reverend and The Honourable Sir Paul Reeves, Archbishop and Primate of New Zealand, 1980–1985, and Governor General of New Zealand, 1985–1990.

“In naming our new apartments in honour of Sir Paul, we celebrate his memory, his association with The Selwyn Foundation and the respect in which he was held by so many in New Zealand and overseas,” said Dr Kay Hawk, Chair of The Selwyn Foundation Trust Board, in her address to an invited audience of the late Sir Paul’s family, friends and former colleagues, residents of the new apartments, senior members of the Anglican Church and Selwyn staff.

As Bishop of Auckland and Archbishop, Sir Paul was President of The Selwyn Foundation when Selwyn first offered independent living accommodation for retired people. He officiated at a number of events marking the Foundation’s expansion of services and, notably, as Archbishop, spoke during the eulogy in July 1981 for Canon Douglas Caswell, former Auckland City Missioner and Selwyn’s founding father.

Sir Paul belonged to the Puketapu hapu of the Te Atiawa of Taranaki and was the first person of Maori descent to be appointed Governor General. He touched hearts as few public figures have and was committed to shaping and improving life in New Zealand.

The new Reeves Apartments comprise 56 stylish one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, with prices starting from $415,000. Showcasing the latest thinking in retirement living, the impressive development also offers an extensive array of leisure amenities, including a 150-seater restaurant and café, a spa pool and 15 metre swimming pool, a well equipped gym, and a dance floor and function area - all of which are in addition to the wide-ranging leisure and health and wellbeing facilities already available in the village.

Selwyn Heights village is part of The Selwyn Foundation, a New Zealand-owned independent charitable trust, providing independent retirement living, residential care (rest homes, hospitals and dementia care) and community services for older people.
