Summer reading programme gives kids a head-start

Summer reading programme gives kids a head-start

Hutt City Libraries’ successful summer reading programme is back for another year and is set to help scores of children across Hutt City retain reading levels over the holiday period and win great prizes.

Research has proven that young people experience learning loss when they don't engage in educational and reading activities during the summer period, and the programme provides a fun opportunity to stay ahead.

Children read books, complete tasks and are encouraged to engage with family and friends. Families can also attend exciting summer holiday events at Hutt City Libraries.

Sandra Mann, Divisional Manager Libraries, says that “this year’s summer reading programme has built on the success of previous years and we’re really excited to deliver a bigger programme with great incentives for kids.”

Hutt City Libraries has teamed up with 2013 Children’s Publisher of the Year, Gecko Press to give local schools free books when students sign up and a special prize for the school with the most books read at the end of the programme. A number of other local businesses also support the programme with activity based prizes.

Children across the region aged 5-12 years can sign up to The Big Read fromDecember 15 at any Hutt City Library. Teen Read for 13-18 year olds will be launched with a scavenger hunt on 4 December at the War Memorial Library from 5:30pm.
