Teenage ambassadors taking road safety messages to Rotorua streets

Rotorua Lakes High School students are getting amongst the community this week to help Rotorua Lakes Council spread road safety messages.

The Year 9 and 10 students will be out in force as Road Safety Ambassadors over the next three days (1 to 3 December) handing out Christmas road safety gifts to the public and promoting Road Safety Rotorua initiatives, including its Facebook page and Party Register details.

Rotorua Lakes Council road safety coordinator Jodie Lawson said it was great to have the students volunteering their time to get road safety messages out to the community before Christmas.

“I’m keen to help promote work experience for the college, as an alternative to elective week activities which can be expensive for students and their parents. We’re making it possible for them to go out into the community and provide an important service, while having fun at the same time.

“Our ambassadors will also be promoting responsible behaviour around alcohol this season, such as organising sober rides home after festive celebrations, not pushing someone who declines a drink, and never drinking and driving.”

Road Safety Ambassador Georgia Dobbe (15) said it was “really cool” to be given the opportunity to help raise awareness in the community.

”It’s especially fun handing out the goodies as people are happy to receive them.”

The Road Safety Ambassadors will be at key locations around Rotorua over the next three days (Monday to Wednesday) spreading the festive joy, sharing road safety messages and handing out bags with road safety goodies.
