Get a new kitchen for nothing
A ‘brand new’ outdoor kitchen is the newest feature at Sticky Fingers Childcare and Education Centre, installed at next to no cost.
“Well it’s not exactly brand new,” says Rachel Atkinson, teacher at Sticky Fingers.
All the materials to build the kitchen and furnish with pots, pans and utensils were sourced for free from Secondhand Sunday fossicking.
“It is called Papatūānuku’s Kitchen. A lot of the parents comment that it is just like how they grew up; using pots, mixing up potions in the backyard, making mud pies.”
Secondhand Sundays are held on the first Sunday of each month except for January and the next event is this Sunday 7 December.
People can participate at two levels, by placing old household items out at their gate for others to pick up or by visiting participating addresses to search for a bargain.
“One person’s rubbish can be another’s treasure,” says waste minimisation officer, Anne Lister.
“Council encourages as many people as possible to get involved as this makes for more exchange of waste,” says Ms Lister.
“It is surprising, but most of what gets put out at the gate gets taken. If anything is left the owner has to deal with it themselves which usually involves household rubbish bags or making a trip to the transfer station.
There is a significant monetary saving by not having to landfill so much.”
Householders who wish to participate in placing items at their kerb are urged to register their address with council.
Addresses will be published publically in the Gisborne Herald on the Saturday prior to the event and a list will be available at the library, council customer services and on council’s website and Facebook page.
“With Christmas coming up this can be a great source of upcycled gifts or a way to prepare for next year’s flatting experience, or even a new ‘outdoor kitchen’,” says Ms Lister.
“All addresses should be registered through our website www.gdc.govt.nz or call us on 06 867 2049 no later than 5pm this Thursday 5 December.”
