Driving On free course for senior drivers

Drivers over 65 years are being offered a free practical driving session next month to update, refresh and improve their skills and knowledge.

Driving On is being held at Ricoh Taupo Motorsport Park on Tuesday 9 December from 9.45am to 3.30pm with a number of qualified driving instructors and police officers taking participants through practical driving skills.

Rotorua district councillor Mark Gould, who leads the Older Persons stream of the council’s People Portfolio, said many local people were now continuing to drive well into their latter years.

“This programme will help give them the confidence to enjoy safe and successful mobility for as long as possible. I’d really encourage drivers over 65 years to register for this beneficial course, to refresh their knowledge and help them remain comfortable on the road.”

Council road safety coordinator Jodie Lawson says Driving On is a valuable opportunity for senior drivers to brush up on their driving skills in a safe, controlled environment, with the help of qualified driving coaches.

“Support is on-hand to help refresh older drivers’ knowledge of driving on today’s roads. It’s a free course for them but for our council and our partners it’s a valuable investment in our senior drivers’ lives.”

Driving On is a joint partnership between Rotorua District Council, Taupo District Council, NZ Police and Rotary.

There are limited spaces on Driving On so those wanting to participate should register with Rotorua District Council on 07 348 4199 as soon as possible. Drivers need to have their own cars.
