Golden Oldies 2018 World Sports Festival coming to Christchurch

Christchurch City Council and Vintage Sports Limited Events (VSL) are bringing the Golden Oldies World 2018 Sports Festival to Christchurch.

The Golden Oldies 2018 World Sports Festival is a month long international celebration of Golden Oldies sports events including cricket, field hockey, rugby, football, golf, softball and netball.

"We are delighted to have Christchurch as the host city for the Golden Oldies 2018 World Sports Festival," says Mike Godinet, Christchurch Manager for Vintage Sports Limited (VSL).

"Bringing the games to Christchurch, where there is such a proud sporting heritage, will guarantee a great festival for both participants and spectators," says Mr Godinet.

Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck says she is also looking forward to seeing the games come to town.

"This is a great sporting and social festival that brings tremendous excitement and really great visitor numbers here to Christchurch. They are here for fun and sport, and we know they will have a great time."

The Canterbury Community Trust Lead Trustee, Tracey Chambers says that the Trust is passionate about this event and what it will bring to the City, both in terms of engagement and economic benefits.
"The $100,000 we have invested in the Golden Oldies demonstrates our continuing commitment to making things happen in our community, providing people with events to look forward to and shining a spotlight on Christchurch internationally," says Mrs Chambers.

* VSL is a New Zealand based company specialising in delivering sports events.
* The Golden Oldies brand has been in operation since 1979, delivering Golden Oldie's events to tens of thousands of participants.
* The Golden Oldies 2018 World Sports Festival is a new event concept based on bringing together a number of Golden Oldies sports events under one banner and held over one month in 2018.
* Golden Oldies 2018 World Sports Festival events are for competitors 35 years and over. The concept is based on a spirit of fun, friendship and fraternity, in a way that gives enjoyment both on and off the field of play.
* The event will involve 8500 competitors (9300 visitors in total) and will bring an estimated $17.5 million of economic benefit into the city, plus numerous social benefits.
