A tale of two bridges
A tale of two bridges: Riccarton bridge fixed, Fendalton
bridge about to be fixed
Kahu Road bridge near
Christchurch Boys High reopened to traffic last night, 18
November.
The brick sides of the bridge are still being repaired by SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team so safety fences are in place with a 40kph speed limit. This work should be done before Christmas.
Drivers need to take special care as the cycle lane is being merged with the traffic lane while the sides are rebuilt.
Thanks to the businesses at Riccarton House and the weekend markets for their patience over the past two months. Thanks also to all drivers who have had to use Clyde Road and take a longer journey to get through Ilam/ Riccarton.

The flow on effect of Kahu Road bridge being fixed –
Fendalton Road bridge work starts
As a result of the Kahu
Road bridge reopening to traffic, another bridge in this
area can now also be fixed.
Fendalton Road bridge at the juncture of Harper, Deans Aves and Fendalton Road at Hagley Park near Christchurch Girls High School will be repaired by SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team from Monday 24 November.
Drivers who have been using this route while Kahu Road was closed to through traffic, might like to go back to Kahu Road from Monday.
The lanes on the Fendalton Road bridge going west, towards the airport, will be reduced to just one, with one turn from Deans Ave and one turn (currently two are available) from Harper Ave.
In this case, the bridge is not badly damaged by the earthquakes and the repair will be a matter of weeks with no need for a full traffic closure. Work will run until the Christmas break-up, then resume in January for four weeks.
Thanks to everyone for taking care around people walking their dogs, crossing at the lights, cycling and getting to school.
