City Discovery Day to showcase central Christchurch progress

18 November 2014

City Discovery Day to showcase central Christchurch’s progress

Central Christchurch’s constantly changing landscape will be showcased to residents and visitors in a City Discovery Day, says Christchurch Central Development Unit director Warwick Isaacs.

The City Discovery Day will be held from 10am to 2pm on Sunday 23 November. People will be provided with a specially designed map marking points of interest at the City Discovery Day site (corner Madras and Armagh Streets) and encouraged to take a self-guided tour to discover for themselves what’s happening.

“The City Discovery Day is an opportunity for residents and visitors to come into the city to check on progress and see what’s new,” says Mr Isaacs.

“The city is an interesting and vibrant place to visit and things are changing all the time. The self-directed walk is a chance for people to see the city in their own time and their own way.”

“The Avon River Precinct, Bus Interchange and Justice and Emergency Services Precinct are all well underway, as well as many private developments. The energy and excitement of what is already happening shows how the city is coming together and this day will encourage people to keep coming into town to see the evolving city.”

More anchor projects to check out include the newly reopened Hagley Cricket Oval, construction underway in the Innovation Precinct and the progress in the Retail Precinct as The Terrace and Cashel Square, among others, start to take shape. Information signs will be at all the anchor project sites. Other areas of interest for people to visit include New Regent Street, The Commons and Re:Start Mall.

The starting point for the journey is the corner of Madras and Armagh Streets, opposite the Margaret Mahy Family Playground site. The Future Christchurch Visionarium will be onsite, along with other displays, a DJ, a bouncy castle and free sausage sizzle.

There will also be a city centre wide quiz with prizes up for grabs. The answers to the questions will be available on both site signage around the city and Future Christchurch social media with entry forms available at the City Discovery Day site.
