Ruapehu Citizen Awards Decided

The 2014 Ruapehu Citizen Awards have been decided with the Northern Ruapehu Citizen Award being awarded to Mr Murray Wilson while the Waimarino-Waiouru Citizen Award recipient is Mr Tammy Pikari.

The Ruapehu District Citizen Awards are split into Awards for the north and south of the district with the Waimarino-Waiouru Award covering the southern half of the district and the Northern Ruapehu Award covering the northern half including National Park, Taumarunui and Ohura.

Murray Wilson was nominated for his contributions to the National Park Progressive Association and the National Park Business Association and also his contribution to establishing and maintaining walking and cycle trails such as the Marton Sash and Door cycle trail and Tupapakura Falls walking trail.

Tammy Pikari who is a Raetihi local was nominated for his longstanding contribution to his community which has included giving his time to supporting the elderly, families in need, voluntary groups, churches, Raetihi Primary School and local maraes.

Mr Pikari also played a major volunteer role in the Waimarino Hospital Reunion.

Both Mr Wilson and Mr Pikari will be presented with their Citizens awards at a Council meeting on the 12th of December in the Ohakune Council Chambers.

Mayor Don Cameron said that both Citizen Award recipients were very worthy and had been selected for their outstanding contribution to serving their communities over an extended period of time.

“I am happy to see both Mr Pikari and Mr Wilson being recognised for the huge efforts they have put into their local communities and by extension the Ruapehu district as a whole” he said.

“The commitment and dedication of people like Mr Wilson and Mr Pikari in our communities often goes uncelebrated; Citizen Awards are an opportunity to give people like these the recognition and thanks that they deserve.”
