Stay safe this summer with Safe Hutt Valley

Safe Hutt Valley has launched a new website just in time for the summer season.

The new website provides easy access to important community updates, and hosts a range of handy safety tools and resources to help families and communities to stay safe over the summer period and beyond.

Handy summer safety tips include:

• Look out for your neighbours – many people travel over the summer period which leads to unoccupied homes. Set up or join a neighbourhood support group in your area by contacting Hutt Safe City Group Charitable Trust at nsgroup@xtra.co.nz.

• The festive period can lead to increased levels of stress in households. Seek support if you are affected by family violence. Talk to someone you trust, or get in touch with one of the many support services available in the Hutt Valley.

• Drink-driving limits are being lowered for adult drivers aged 20 years and over from December 1. Make a plan to get home safely and if you’re going to be driving, Say Yeah, Nah to beersies. See the Health Promotion Agency website for some good ideas.

• Don’t drive when you’re tired, and try to minimise distractions like mobile phones, maps and finding the right radio station. Read more on the NZTA website.

• Lesley Davies, Safe Hutt Valley Co-ordinator, says that “we all get exceptionally busy over the summer period and the new Safe Hutt Valley website is a really simple tool to help keep yourself, your whānau and your neighbourhood safe.”

The website is live now at www.safehuttvalley.org.nz.

Safe Hutt Valley is a group of organisations committed to promoting safety in the Hutt Valley, and reducing the number and severity of preventable injuries.

The group consists of a range of agencies including Hutt City and Upper Hutt City Councils, Regional Public Health, Hutt Valley District Health Board, ACC, Awakairangi Maori Regional Board and the New Zealand Police.
