Water conservation matters - even when it’s raining!

Summer’s on the way and that means more demand on our water. Alex van Paassen, from the council-owned water services company Wellington Water, says garden watering restrictions are already in place and water conservation should be top of mind – even if it’s raining.

“Lots of us have developed water saving habits over the drier months, but it’s wise to be careful whatever the weather. For instance, not many people know that rain can make river water too dirty to treat, so we need to draw on our storage supplies when that happens.”

Mr van Paassen says there are lots of ways we can conserve water at home, school and work and Wellington Water has developed a demonstration device, “Aquarius”, to help people get a better handle on “the numbers” of water conservation.

“People don’t always realise that water equals money, and not just for council treatment or pumping costs.

“Using a low flow shower head, for example, or fixing hot water leaks could save you up to $500 a year on power bills. Things like that make people sit up and take notice.”

Aquarius is a self-contained bathroom complete with taps, shower heads and even a flushing toilet. It helps people of all ages learn more about how much water is used when you turn on the tap, take a shower or flush the toilet, or how much is needlessly wasted through leaks.

Aquarius is free for schools and community organisations to use at events and assist with learning.

“We’ll deliver Aquarius, give a demonstration, and leave it with your school or at your event for as long as you need. You can then see first-hand exactly how much water you, your school, or household is using. It’s a great educational tool and great fun too.”

Rosie Doole, Water Conservation Co-ordinator says seeing, touching and then measuring is a great way for people to learn about water efficiency. “I love it when adults’ and kids’ perceptions are changed by the results of hands-on investigation… water is valuable and fun.”
