The state of our environment | October 2014
October had all the usual elements of spring – windy… tick; hot one day and cold the next…tick; rain taps took a small twist towards off… tick. All a bit unremarkable. Rainfall was fairly typical for the time of year (within 20% of normal) but some catchments did fall short, particularly those around Waikaremoana and from Napier southwards. A number of our rivers are below their usual levels and groundwater stocks teeter between normal and below normal on the Plains. Soil moisture levels are on a fairly typical spring-time trajectory downwards. Daytime temperatures were very average for October but nights were cooler than usual and we squeezed out another two slight frosts for the year. Spring wouldn’t be spring without a bit of wind - gusts topped a 100 km/h early on in the month and toppled a couple of trucks driving on the region’s roads. If you’ve ever biked in that sort of wind, you’ll know it’s enough to blow grit into every orifice and follicle.
