Colmar Brunton poll of Christchurch residents about the cathedral
The Colmar Brunton poll released today shows the majority of CHCH residents want the cathedral restored.
The poll also reveals that many people are still being influenced by the misinformation about cost and feasibility of restoration.
When people accept that restoration cost is comparable to a new cathedral (which it is)and any extra cost above insurance will be covered by private donations (which is the offer) support for restoration increases from 51% to 66%.
And it is worth noting that The Press ‘on line’ poll also has two thirds voting for restoration.
The community mental health and well-being benefits of restoration are also well indicated in the Colmar Brunton poll
77% of respondents say the people of Christchurch should have a say.
And 92% of respondents say the cathedral has always been a vital part of Christchurch’s history and heritage.
And a strong majority (68%) say it would boost the morale of Christchurch residents to have the cathedral restored
This is not just about buildings…it is about Christchurch people grieving for their losses and wanting their city’s mother church back.
We hope the church will now reconsider and engage with all those who are offering assistance to restore the city’s cathedral
