Motorists warned of possible delays on Western Corridor
Motorists are being warned of possible delays on State Highway 1 to the west of Christchurch this weekend as the asphalt top coat is laid on the third stage of the Western Corridor.
Masham and Carmen Roads, from Yaldhurst Road through to Waterloo Road, were opened to four lanes in mid-July, bringing to an end a two-and-half-year project to upgrade this section of the highway as part of the Christchurch Roads of National Significance programme.
The NZ Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Colin Knaggs says it was good to get this section of the Western Corridor opened in July, however, the laying of the asphalt top coat could not be done because temperatures were too cold at the time.
“If the weather permits, we will complete this work on Saturday and Sunday, and this may cause some delays for motorists.”
He says the Transport Agency apologises in advance for any inconvenience.
If the weather is unsuitable for the work to be carried out, an alternative date will be found later in November, after NZ Cup and Show Week.
State Highway 1 is being four-laned from Belfast through to Hornby, one of the three corridors being built to the west, south and north of the city to support the rebuild and economic growth of Canterbury.
