Prizes galore – Mayor wants more!
Thirteen Whangarei businesses have sponsored prizes totaling over $4000 for Whangarei City’s 50th anniversary Grand Parade on 1 November, and Mayor Sheryl Mai wants to hear from more.
“Michael Hill Jeweller was the first to sponsor a prize by donating a ceramic and diamond watch valued at $2299,” says Mayor Mai.
“This will go to the best 60s-dressed man in the crowd, and the other prizes are also impressive.”
The best 60s-dressed woman wins a $500 glamour photography voucher from Sarahlee Studio, the best-dressed couple wins a package of hair products and two hairstyling vouchers from Rodney Wayne, and the best-dressed junior takes away $100 worth of Kiwi Critters books from Lighthouse Media and a $30 voucher from SuperBabySuperMum.
“Office Max gave us a top notch digital camera for the best float, mPark added $100 worth of central city parking credit, and they’ll also receive a $200 Prezzy card courtesy of Oceania Marine,” Mayor Mai says.
“The runner-up float will need plenty of arms to carry goodies away with an $80 pack of treats from SuperFood, a $30 pack of doggie treats from SuperDog, an antique tea set and wine glasses from Rainbows Relics, and a Prezzy card valued at $100 on offer.”
Spire Chartered Accountants have offered balloons and rugby balls to use as give-aways.
Sponsors are still needed for the ‘teens’ and ‘tweens’ prize categories.
“We’d love to hear from any business wanting to donate unisex goods or services suitable for teenagers or children between the ages of 7 and 12,” Mayor Mai says.
Other Whangarei businesses are also getting into the 60’s swing.
“Staff at Council’s Customer Services at Forum North are dressing up in 1960’s gear for the week leading up to the big day,” Mayor Mai says.
“Malletts is creating a 1960’s-themed shop window, and staff at Headlines Hairstylists and the Walton St Café will also be in 1960’s dress.

“We’re very grateful to those who have already offered sponsorship, and we’re very willing to receive more,” Mayor Mai says.
