Council civil defence resources stolen
Christchurch City Council is appealing for any information relating to the theft of $60,000-$70,000 worth of civil defence equipment over the weekend.
Several large aluminium tool boxes, 20 generators and 27 boxes of blankets (approximately 540 in total) were stolen from the Sockburn civil defence facility. Staff were alerted to the break in by a member of the public on Sunday.
Police have been notified and are investigating the incident.
Murray Sinclair, Manager Civil Defence and Emergency Management, says some of the stolen items had been donated by overseas countries and local and national businesses following the February 2011 earthquake.
“It is extremely disappointing that burglars would target civil defence resources that are so essential in disaster situations. We are working closely with the Police to recover this equipment and we're asking anyone with information on the theft to contact either the Police or Christchurch City Council.”
