New Anzac Lawn and redeveloped Cenotaph for 2015

Hutt will open a new Anzac Lawn and expand the Cenotaph area
in time for Anzac Day celebrations in 2015, following a
decision by the City Development Committee late last
week.
The Cenotaph and Anzac Lawn is the first phase of the Riddiford Gardens redevelopment and is the area adjacent to War Memorial Library, along Queens Drive.
The Cenotaph will sit at the head of Anzac Lawn and be a place that can equally cater to formal commemorations, like Anzac Day and Armistice Day, as well as being a place for recreation and activity in other times.
Work on the lawn will begin before Christmas. The larger Anzac project will be complete and opened for 25 April 2015.
David Bassett, Deputy Mayor of Lower Hutt and Chair of the City Development Committee says, “The Cenotaph and Anzac lawn will be a significant and appropriate way to remember all the men and women of Lower Hutt who have served our city and country in a number of wars, battles and campaigns.
“We have worked closely on this project with the Lower Hutt Memorial RSA who have been great allies in their advice, support and direction.”
Alison Sexton, President of the Lower Hutt Memorial RSA says, “We were very pleased to have been asked by Council to work with them on the Anzac Lawn and Cenotaph area, particularly as 2015 is such an important year for commemorations.
“The work has been widely discussed by our members, who have been involved with this worthwhile project from the outset.
“We have had a good working relationship with Council in the past and it is pleasing to see this continue.”
The Cenotaph area will use high quality materials and the intention is to include commemorative spaces along short, upright walls in the area to provide places to acknowledge our servicemen and women.
The Anzac Lawn will be used for formal events or for everyday recreation and general activities. Both areas will be fully accessible, meaning easy access for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The concept design for the greater Riddiford Gardens project was also signed off at the City Development Committee meeting of Thursday 16 October, which means the landscape planning can now move to a detailed design phase.
