Passing of Jonathan Mane-Wheoki

Ministry for Culture and Heritage acknowledges the passing of
Jonathan Mane-Wheoki

We were saddened to hear of the recent death of Jonathan Mane-Wheoki, Te Papa’s Head of Arts and Visual Culture, says Lewis Holden, Chief Executive of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

“The Ministry for Culture and Heritage extends its sympathy to Jonathan’s partner and whanau at this time.”

Jonathan Mane-Wheoki has contributed hugely to the arts and cultural sector over a long period and in recent times in his role at Te Papa. One of his major accomplishments at Te Papa was pioneering Nga Toi/ Arts Te Papa which saw the expansion of Te Papa’s presentation of the national art collection. He recently oversaw the expansion of art space at Te Papa and regular rotation of the exhibits, enabling the showcasing of more of the collection.

Earlier this year his contribution to the sector was recognised when he was appointed as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM).

“His passing is a great loss but his legacy will be significant,” says Lewis Holden.
