Mapping workshop led by Google Earth Outreach
Non-profit mapping and technology specialists are being invited to attend the Māori Indigenous Mapping Workshop being
hosted in November by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi.
The workshop with the Google Earth Outreach team will run over three days from November 5-7 at the Awanuiārangi campus
in Whakatāne. Attendance is free, and anyone who is interested can apply (atimwaotearoa.earthoutreach.org.nz).
Google Earth Outreach gives non-profits and public benefit organisations knowledge and resources to visualise their
cause and tell their story in Google Earth & Maps to hundreds of millions of people.
The hands-on workshop is limited to 100 participants, who must meet one or more of the following requirements:
Be members of, or working directly for, Māori communities;
Be decision-makers and mapping or technology specialists;
Demonstrate interest and ability in implementing and making effective use of Google mapping technology within their
community;
Currently working on mapping projects, or are planning mapping projects in their communities.
The three days will include field trips and presentations on mapping traditional knowledge and land use, mapping and
land claims, indigenous environmental monitoring, and inter-generational knowledge mobilisation. Raleigh Seamster, of
Google Earth Outreach, will present an overview of how indigenous peoples have been using Google mapping tools to
collect and visualise their data.
