Seeking snaps of local treasures

Seeking snaps of local treasures

Conservation Week is coming up and students around the Region are being asked to take a picture of their favourite local treasure for the chance to win great prizes.

Horizons Regional Council, in conjunction with the Department of Conservation and Te Manawa, is running the photo competition based around this year’s Conservation Week theme: “discover the world where you live”.

Horizons environmental educator Helen Thomas says the school holidays provide the perfect opportunity for students to get out, discover the Region and send in their favourite snaps.

“Our Region is full of special places and Conservation Week is the perfect time to celebrate the wonders of the world around us.

“We’ll be involved in a number of events throughout the week, which runs from 1-9 November. The winning photo entries will be made into a sustainability calendar and there are some fantastic prizes up for grabs including native plants and the opportunity to name a native fish living at Te Manawa,” Mrs Thomas says.

The competition is open to all students aged between 3 and 18, with four entry categories: ECE ages 3-5, Primary Years 1-6, Junior Years 7-10 and Senior Years 11-13.

Photographs must have been taken between 15 September and 28 October 2014 and treasures can include anything from a place or species to a person or group but should relate back to conservation in some way.

Photos should be submitted via email to education@horizons.govt.nz with the subject line “local treasure” as well as details of where and when the photo was taken, a brief caption describing the photo and the entrant’s age, name, school and contact details.
