Turoa and Whakapapa turn pink for The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation
This Saturday 4 October, Turoa and Whakapapa will be turning the slopes pink in a bid to raise funds for the New Zealand
Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) and skiers are encouraged to get their togs out and get involved too.
Following on from last year’s successful Bikini Downhill event that raised more than $1,000 for NZBCF, Mt Ruapehu’s snow
school is stepping up the challenge to make the 2014 event bigger, better and pinker!
The climax of the day is the fun Bikini Downhill event, sponsored by Tongariro River Rafting and Parklands Motor Lodge,
which is open to everyone; young, old, skiers, snowboarders, in bikini or otherwise. The ‘race’ will start at 10am on
both sides of the mountain and the course will remain open for two hours. Turoa’s start line is at the top of the Yahoo
trail while Whakapapa’s is at the top of K Road. Skiers can register at each side’s customer services office.
100 per cent of the $5 entry fee will be donated to NZBCF and spot prizes are up for grabs.
Mt Ruapehu customer relations manager, Annah Dowsett said staff are proud to be providing visitors with a way to show
their support for the NZBCF.
“Almost everyone knows someone going through breast cancer so we’re glad we can do our bit to support a great cause,”
said Dowsett.
On the day, guests will also have the opportunity to get their photo in the ‘pink frame’ at various locations around
Turoa and Whakapapa, buy promotional items, and donate, with buckets dotted around the ski area. Snow school is also
getting right behind the cause turning their offices pink for the day and dressing in the colour.
During the week prior, skiers will be able to participate in a ‘silent auction’ on the mountain and bid for a pink
breakfast and two hour private lesson with two of the top male instructors. Breakfast will be served in the Alpine Bar
at the pinkest table known to man in the morning before the instructors and their two guests hit the snow for first
chair.
Eager skiers should also note that lowest price 2015 season passes are on sale throughout the month of October. Adult
passes (19 years and over) are $529, youth passes (five to 18 years) are $317, and children (five to 10 years) receive a
$49 pass when an adult season pass is purchased. 2014 season pass holders as well as three-day and four-day flexi pass
holders receive $50 off adult season passes and $20 off youth season passes if purchased in October.
Spring conditions at Mt Ruapehu are fantastic with more than two metres on both sides. Skiers should watch the weather
and get there when they can to make the most out of the season.
