“Trucking And Cycling Communities Come Together for the Purpose of Cycle Safety in Christchurch”

Saturday October 11th 2014 at the “Tyre General GT Radial Trucking 2014” to be held at Wigram Air Force Museum, Christchurch 10am – 5pm

The Trucking Industry is being proactive in trying to save lives by working with Can and Spoke to promote Cycle safety, to educate how to share the road safely.

Transport companies Canterbury Bulk Freight and Move Logistics volunteer Trucks for a working display.
In a controlled setting cyclist will be able to get up close and personal with a large truck. The purpose is to learn how to share the road safely. Cyclists will be able to climb into the truck and see what the Trucker sees; the Driver can get on a cycle and understand the issues of the cyclists.

“When we heard about the program to promote Cycle safety at the show we volunteered a large truck so people can climb into the truck cab this will give the cyclist a bird’s eye view of what the blind spots are on a big truck. We are also opening up the back of the truck so people can walk inside it and get a real feel for the size” said Alex Cowdell

Learning were the blinds spots and how staying out of these areas will save your life.

“While the transport industry shows off at what has become the largest Trucking show that has ever been held in the South Island, what better opportunity than to get everyone together to have a working display that teaches both the Truck Driver and the Cyclist how to share the road safely” said David Boyce CEO NZ Trucking Association.

Over 80 trade displays will be showing off the latest in Technology, Supplies, and Services in the stunning event hall at Wigram Air Force Museum. Step outside onto the Tarmac and it’s all about Trucks. From the Big Rigs that roll up and down the country side to the Vintage Trucks which have been restored lovingly to original conditions and everything in between.

Real life working displays including cranes, trailers, and a logging truck which is going to be loading and unloading logs.

The stars of the show are the drivers, the hardworking truckers who are driving their rigs to the show and will line them up (in a straight line) along the tarmac, over 250 so far but we are hoping to exceed that number and make this the biggest show & shine ever. The show & shine is all about real life working trucks and is a celebration of the skill that is required to drive these rigs.

We are using this event to highlight the qualifications and career opportunities in the industry. The NEW “Road Transport Career HUB” is a dedicated area that includes all the career agencies, companies that provide driver training and companies who are looking to recruit including the newly formed initiative WiRT (Women in Road Transport). Companies can post on the employment towers “situations vacant” and public can post “situations wanted” for FREE.

Free blood pressure checks from Canterbury Rural Health are a way they can engage with the truckies to encourage them to review their health regularly.

Mini Convoy – Friday 10th October, the day before the show at 10am a mini convoy of trucks are picking up children from the Museum and taking them for a ride. A collection of various trucks including a tanker, dump truck, line haul truck, vintage truck and more.

Public Entry is minimum Gold Coin donation and all proceeds are going to our two charities for the day Ronald McDonald House and Child Cancer Canterbury. A charity auction will also be held at the dinner that rounds off the day.
