Generous Youth Recognised through Youth Community Spirit Award

Natasha Bailey of Tararua College has been named as the 2014 Trustpower Tararua District Youth Community Spirit Award winner for her service to school and community. This award is jointly run by Trustpower and the Tararua District Council in conjunction with the Trustpower Tararua District Community Awards.

The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award celebrates the work young people do to enrich their community and is open to all students who have given service to school or community projects, treated others with care and respect and are a good ambassador for the school and the Tararua region. Local high schools were asked to nominate one student to be considered for the Award.

Trustpower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville says the Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award is a great opportunity for a generous student with a big heart to be formally acknowledged and congratulated.

“Natasha has a natural instinct to give her time, talents and experience freely. She is especially passionate about generating great community spirit in her school and in the wider community and this shines through in her role as Sports Captain at Tararua College. This role sees her organise everything from rallying students to give blood, to being a bus monitor, to raising $900 for the Cancer Society through the Relay for Life.

“She also dedicates big hours to coaching, managing and mentoring sports teams. Over the past four years this has included refereeing hockey, touch and netball as well as coaching swimming for the Pahiatua Swimming Club. On top of this she has fundraised for the Heart Foundation and updates the Mangamaire Country School website.

“Whatever lands on her plate this young lady finds the time to rise to the challenge, make a difference, while still meeting other commitments. It’s great to able to able to recognise these achievements”, says Miss Somerville.

For winning the Award Natasha will receive a trophy, a framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 being given to a community group or organisation of her choice.

The Trustpower Youth Community Spirit Award will be presented at the Trustpower Tararua District Community Awards, being held at the Eketahuna Community Centre tonight on Wednesday 24 September.
