National’s re-election great for Wellington region economy

The re-election of a National Government is great news for the Wellington region, says Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce President John Milford.

“The Chamber has said all along that the region needs a pro-business government if the gains of the past year or so are to be continued, and National’s re-election will definitely ensure that.

“The John Key Government’s Business Growth Agenda, which supports business, jobs, and economic growth by way of progressing free trade agreements, improving the RMA, reducing compliance costs, addressing skills shortages, improving employment law, and continuing the road improvement programme is exactly the track New Zealand’s economy needs to stay on.

“And these things will directly benefit the Wellington region’s economy.

“We know that the National Government also supports the Chamber’s aims of local government amalgamation, will push on with the Northern Corridor from the airport to Levin without delay, and is keen to find a solution to the Basin Bridge issue.

“These are vital issues for the regional economy.

“There are also other issues that the Chamber is keen to pursue, and it’s good to know the door is open to a Government that has business and growth at the front of its mind.

“Extending the airport runway is probably top of that list, and we will be keen to talk to the Government in the light of theeconomic impact report which shows big benefits for the city, the region and for New Zealand.

"It’s hard to ignore the estimates of a $1.75 billion injection into the national economy and $684 million into the local economy by 2060 from an airport with possible direct links to Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, and even Los Angeles and Kuala Lumpur, and that’s what we must start talking about.”
