Get Ready Week to promote local preparedness
Rotorua
District Council (RDC) and Rotorua Civil Defence Emergency
Management (CDEM) Group are coordinating a number of
activities to support Get Ready Week 2014.
The annual event is being celebrated nationally from 21 to 27 September. This year’s theme is What Would You Do?, aimed at raising awareness of potential hazards and the need to be prepared.
RDC Emergency Management coordinator Pauline Hitchcock said Get Ready Week is a great opportunity for families and businesses to check emergency supplies, update evacuation plans and reacquaint themselves with their neighbours.
“Disasters can strike without warning so I urge local residents to make sure they’re prepared for emergencies. The Christchurch earthquake and events around the world in recent years are tragic reminders of how important it is to take action so we can look after ourselves and our families.”
Get Ready Week events planned around Rotorua include marae-based activities for young offenders, a display at Rotorua Library with CDEM staff available to answer questions, ‘The Stinger’ testing at Lake Okareka, as well as training and presentations throughout the city.
There is also an online quiz competition with a Grab&Go emergency kit up for grabs and colouring activity on the Rotorua District Council website rdc.govt.nz and Facebook page facebook.com/RotoruaDistrictCouncil.
