Maintenance begins on Hastings Pou

Carvers have begun the first round of a regular maintenance regime on the 18 Pou which were unveiled in Hastings Civic Square last year.

The Pou represent Tipuna (ancestors) from the 18 Marae in Ngati Kahungunu, and were unveiled in a moving ceremony on Friday 26th July 2013. They were created by a team of 20 local carvers over a period of 10 months from ancient totara, which was recovered from a river in Te Urewera and gifted by the people of Tuhoe.

Spokesperson Des Ratima says “A number of Pou have been identified as requiring some immediate maintenance and will be removed from Civic Square to Tuaka, located in Southampton Street. The repairs involve closing some small splits in the wood and some refinishing work.”

Des Ratima says “Repairs have already been completed on the Pou representing Omahu Marae. 5 more Pou will be removed from their bases at Civic Square on Monday 22nd September and should be back in place by Monday 29th September. This maintenance is essential to ensure that the Pou remain in perfect condition for the community to enjoy for many years to come.”

The 5 Pou to be removed on Monday represent Waimarama, Mangaroa, Houngarea, Tiakitai and Kahuranaki Marae.

The Civic Square Pou project is a collaboration between Nga Marae O Heretaunga and the Hastings District Council.
