QLDC backs Wanaka's Gigatown Bid
The whole of the
Queenstown Lakes District should throw its weight behind
Wanaka’s bid to become New Zealand’s first
“Gigatown”, Mayor Vanessa van Uden said today.
Wanaka has been confirmed as one of the five communities that will battle it out in the competition for the fastest internet in the Southern Hemisphere, with a 1 gigabit internet connection.
“Wanaka ran a very successful campaign in round one; it led almost the whole time and is a terrific example of what a motivated community can achieve when everyone pulls together for a common goal,” Mayor van Uden said.
If Wanaka wins the final competition and becomes Gigatown, there will be economic benefits for the whole district’s community.
“I’ll be encouraging all Council staff to get behind the campaign, and hope that our example will motivate others in the community to do the same,” Mayor van Uden said.
