NZ Landcare Trust: Campaign Focus Northland
A series of events will be delivered around the country as part of a weekend-of-action linked to the Communities for
Clean Water campaign. In the first of a series of articles, we take a brief look at what's planned for Northland.
NZ Landcare Trust supports a number of community based initiatives around the region, many of which have strong ties
with waterways. When weighing up possible ideas for a campaign event the Trust's Northland Regional Coordinator Jon
Hampson decided that a practical session would be ideal. "We want to offer people the chance to experience some of the simple techniques we can use to understand the health of
our waterways and an in-stream workshop is a great way to do this," says Jon.
The 'Whitebait Connection' team will be on hand with nets and traps, and will share their stream monitoring techniques,
demonstrating how anyone can take an active interest in NZ's freshwater biodiversity. Members of Otamatea HarbourCare
Society will also attend to talk about the work they’ve been carrying out. The group believe riparian planting will make
a positive contribution to water quality in the Kaipara Harbour and therefore improve habitat for native plants and
animals, while also making the harbour safer for recreational use.
NZ Landcare Trust has been working with Otamatea HarbourCare Society, supporting their planting activities, including
providing around 1,700 native plants. Funding for the plants came from the Reconnecting Northland programme, the large
landscape initiative that the Trust manages in partnership with WWF-NZ. This ambitious Northland-wide ecological
restoration programme is the first of its kind in New Zealand, and aims to restore a range of natural processes and
ecosystems across the whole region.
The workshop will take place on Sunday 19th October at Te Pahi Stream off Griffin Rd, Maungaturoto, bring your gumboots!
