Date set for Wellington Round the Bays 2015

Sport Wellington has announced the date for the 2015 installment of their annual fun run Round the Bays. The event will
take place on Sunday, 22nd February 2015 with registrations opening on Monday, 3rd November 2014.
This year over 14,000 people took part in the iconic event which includes a 6.5km fun run, 10km and half marathon, all
of which start at Frank Kitts Park and make their way to Kilbirnie Park. Upon opening this year, registrations reached
500 within 60 minutes and surpassed the targeted 1000 within a matter of hours. The event also raised over $50,000 for
the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research.
While the Wellington fun run has been occurring since 1978, Sport Wellington took ownership in 1999. Since inheriting
the event, Sport Wellington has overseen an 814% growth in the number of participants. The event has seen consecutive
sell outs since 2012 and has grown to be New Zealand’s third largest sport and recreation event.
The date announcement follows a statement in early July that, following a successful four year partnership, AMI
Insurance would no longer hold naming rights to the event. Sport Wellington is currently in discussions with a new
principal sponsor and hopes to make an announcement soon.
“The AMI relationship has been fantastic for the event but their decision provides a huge opportunity for a new sponsor
to get involved and for Sport Wellington to develop certain parts of the event” say Event Director James King.
“With any new partnership comes fresh ideas and new opportunities so the Round the Bays team is really looking forward
to creating an even better event experience in 2015.”
