Public input invited on development of new playground
The public is being invited to give their thoughts on the creation of a new playground and family area at Windsor Park in Hastings.
The playground is to be constructed in an area of Splash Planet on the corner of Sylvan and Grove Roads that has limited use. This area will be opened up to the public and will replace the existing playground, located at the entrance to Splash Planet, which is in need of major upgrade.
The Hastings Host Lions Club will partner with Council in developing the play area which will be named the “Lions Playground.
Councillor Sandra Hazlehurst says “This is a fantastic project for the whole community and particularly those people who live in the Mayfair area. The residents of Mayfair have waited patiently for a new park and I am delighted that we will be able to create a facility that will be of enormous value to the community.”
Councillor Hazlehurst says “The Hastings Host Lions Club will co-ordinate the development of programmes and events that will make use of the play area and surrounding park, once the facility is completed.”
“The safety of children is a very important aspect of the development of the playground, and it is proposed that a low fence will be installed around the perimeter to ensure that the area is a safe place to play. Amenities already earmarked for the playground include pathways, a community BBQ and a toilet block,” Councillor Hazlehurst says.
President of Hastings Host Lions Club Graeme Mueller says “Club members are delighted to be working with the council on this Lions Park project. The Hastings Host Lions have been involved in many projects for over 50 years in the Hastings community - one of those being the laying of the tracks for the train which operated on the original Fantasyland site. So to be involved once again with the Lions Playground is a great honour.”
Graeme Mueller says “This project will benefit children, parents, grandparents and also visitors to Hastings and we look forward to having a continued association with the park for many years to come. We have a vision to bring some of the Fantasyland sparkle back to this small corner of Hastings.”
Club Convenors Carol McMillan and Ray Hilliker have organised a Lions team to assist in the park formation.
