Steps to beautifying Jacob's Ladder
Built in 1884, the 135 steps of Jacob's Ladder were originally dirt. The Ladder was concreted in 1907 and is a part of Thames South School's daily fitness regime.
The students of Room 1 have been collecting more than a bag of rubbish every week from the steps, mainly glass and aluminium cans. Four students from Room 1 addressed the Thames Community Board yesterday asking for permission to give Jacob's Ladder a makeover.
The makeover will include painting the Ladder in rainbow colours, numbering the steps in English and Maori, placing rubbish bins at the top and bottom of the ladder and improving the lighting of the steps.
Messages of encouragement will be added on the steps to motivate people to get to the top. Also on the plan is weeding the surrounding area and restoring a bench.
The Thames Community Board and Council are now working with the school to start the process of cleaning the steps ready for painting.
