Coolangatta connection great news for Capital
Today’s (Tuesday 9 September) announcement of regular Jetstar flights between Wellington and Australia’s Gold Coast has been welcomed with great enthusiasm by Wellington City Council.
Wellington’s Deputy Mayor, Justin Lester, says not only will the flights to and from Coolangatta provide a direct link for Wellingtonians to one of their favourite holiday destinations, it’ll also make it easier for our Australian cousins to visit central New Zealand.
“This is something for everyone in the region to be enthused about – the level of service is enhanced and it is likely to mean reduced costs for tourists travelling in both directions.”
The City Council’s Economic Growth Committee Chair, Councillor Jo Coughlan, says the flights to Wellington provide extra capacity, choice and convenience for Queenslanders wanting to holiday or do business in the central regions of this country. It is expected that this new service will see more than 6000 new Australian visitors coming to Wellington each year.
“This news will not only be welcomed in Wellington but also in the Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson – this is undoubtedly good for our local tourism industry and the regional economy.”
The growth in Australian visitors on the back of this new service is expected to add around $3.8 million per annum to the regional GDP.
