Ferrymead Bridge progressing well
Work on the replacement Ferrymead Bridge continues to plough ahead with commuters set to be able to use the new bridge from April next year.
Over the last two months the new bridge’s concrete road-decks have been laid on top of the 26 main beams. As well as supporting the new road-deck, these 50 tonne beams also house critical services such as communication and power cables, and sewer and water supplies.
From now until Christmas 2014, the plan is to connect the wastewater and water services that have been placed through the new bridge. Stormwater for the new approach roads will be constructed at the same time.
Road construction works are expected to start in late November, and be completed by late April 2015, when the new bridge will be opened to traffic. This work includes the installation of new traffic signals at the intersection of Main Road and Bridle Path Road, new kerbing, channels and footpaths.
General Manager Infrastructure Rebuild John Mackie says the new phase of work starting this week will mean ongoing changes to traffic management and possible delays to travel times.
“We understand the significance of this bridge to people who regularly travel out this way. Throughout the project, we’ve been conscious of the works impacting on people’s journey times, and we continue to do our best to minimise this, but sometimes slight delays are unavoidable.
“We really appreciate the patience and understanding the local community has shown us, and ask they bear with us just a bit longer, as we edge closer to early next year when the new bridge will be up and running.”
