Amalgamation not a Forgone Conclusion
New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters will be speaking at a Public Meeting in Upper Hutt next week. Being held on Tuesday 9 September at 7pm, Mr Peters will be discussing the threat of amalgamation to the wider Wellington region.
Hutt City Councillor and President of Grey Power Hutt City Barbara Branch commented on the event that addresses the growing concerns of the region;
“We are pleased to see Government leaders coming forward with their support and speaking out against amalgamation proposals.”
“If you have concerns about the future of our region, or do not fully understand the consequences of amalgamation then this your chance to hear about it. 98% of Grey Power in Hutt Valley are against the proposal. We keep hearing National saying they do not agree with forced amalgamation. To me this is a case of Smoke and Mirrors, to say they will not force amalgamation doesn’t reflect current legislation which would allow a majority rule.”
“Hutt City have always been fiscally responsible and we have a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline for our region. If amalgamation continues these plans will no doubt be shelved and forgotten about. As will the link between community and their local representatives”.
The event is being held on Tuesday 9 September, beginning at 7pm at the Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre, 838-842 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt. Free entry.
