"Man with toy gun causes partial cordon of Hamilton's CBD"
Poor choices on the part of an offender appear to be at the centre of an incident that saw armed Police cordon off a
section of Hamilton's CBD this morning during peak hour traffic.
Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson of the Waikato District Command Centre said armed officers converged on a central city
bakery and cafe shortly after 8.20am.
"There were reports of a man sitting in the store pointing a gun at a fridge in the store.
"As a result armed officers established cordons around the area and worked with City Safe camera operators to obtain a
live feed into the store as they established communications with those inside."
Mr Simpson said a short time later a man emerged from the store and approached one of the Police cordons.
"As a result a toy handgun was recovered and this man has been arrested and is currently being interviewed at the
Hamilton Central Police Station.
"It is too early to say what this person's motivations were but it would be fair to say his actions resulted in a fair
bit of congestion for people trying to get to work in the central city and we would like to thank them for their
cooperation."
