A weather warning has been issued for the eastern parts Northland, north Auckland and Great Barrier Island. The weather warning includes the following information - This is an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms in eastern parts of Northland and the far north of Auckland (including Great Barrier Island) this afternoon and evening. In these areas, storms may produce localised downpours with rain rates of 25-35mm/hr.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
Motorists are reminded of the need to exercise caution, maintain safe following distances and to keep their speed suitable for the conditions when driving in severe weather.
