Caltex Raises $100,000 for Starship’s Operating Rooms
One week; 100,000 transactions; 9,000+ children set to benefit each year
AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 2 SEPTEMBER 2014 – Caltex customers have helped raise $100,000 for the upgrade of the operating rooms at Starship Children’s Hospital –
simply by redeeming their AA Smartfuel discounts at Caltex.
From 25-31 August, Caltex donated $1 to the Starship Foundation every time a customer redeemed their AA Smartfuel
discounts in-store – when customers swiped to save money, they also helped to save a life through this market-first,
nationwide campaign.
“Starship’s operating rooms treat more than 9,000 children each year – that equates to roughly one surgery every hour.
With patients coming from all across the country and the complexity of cases increasing, we find our six existing
operating rooms are frequently at capacity,” says Andrea Newland, General Manager of Marketing, Communications and
Partnerships at the Starship Foundation.
Starship’s operating rooms were originally constructed when the national children’s hospital was built 22 years ago and
standards for surgical environments have moved on since then.
“Our heartfelt thanks goes to Caltex and its customers for supporting Starship’s operating rooms development and for
caring about the many young patients who come to the national children’s hospital for expert care. Caltex’s generous
donation will make a significant difference to improving the patient’s experience at Starship,” adds Newland.
Dean Gilbert, Chevron NZ General Manager, says Caltex is thrilled to have reached its $100,000 target in just one week
and the company is honoured to support to such a worthwhile cause.

Key features of the operating rooms redevelopment include expanded and improved pre-operative, parent waiting, reception
and play areas; an expanded and improved post anaesthetic care unit, an additional and fully equipped new 60m² operating
room, four refurbished operating rooms and installation of an innovative LED lighting, image and core surgical system.
