Waimakariri Zone Committee focuses on local biodiversity values

The Waimakariri Zone Committee will meet in Rangiora on Monday (1 September) for its regular monthly meeting to address local water management issues.

The zone committee will begin the meeting by offering members of the public the opportunity to contribute before going on to receive an update from its Immediate Steps working group.

The Immediate Steps programme supports projects that protect and restore freshwater biodiversity values in Canterbury. Zone committees are responsible for allocating funding and to date 23 projects to the value of more than $360,000 have been approved by the committee.

This means there is still around $140,000 to be allocated so if you have a project that could benefit from Immediate Steps funding search Immediate Steps at www.ecan.govt.nz for further information and an application form.

At the meeting the committee will also review its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management to make sure it is consistent with its future work programmes and priorities.

The committee will finish the meeting with a workshop to review catchment profiles for the Waimakariri zone. The workshop will focus on advancing the outcomes and priorities from its previous planning workshops and build on the work done by its Nutrient Management and Water Efficiency working group to assist subregional catchment planning and priority setting.
