New underpass provides secure passage in Seaview
A new
underpass gives cyclists and walkers in Seaview an
alternative to crossing busy Seaview Road.
The sealed underpass travels under Seaview Bridge and is accessed near the entrance to Hutt Park.
Mayor Ray Wallace attended the opening of the underpass today and said it is an example of Council’s commitment to improving cycling and walking opportunities across the city.
“Seaview Road is a busy area with lots of heavy vehicles on the road so the underpass is a fantastic option for cyclists and walkers who want to avoid this.
“We all know the benefits of cycling and walking such as improving people’s health and reducing traffic congestion.
“Our policy and regulatory subcommittee recently recognised the strength of these benefits to our city by recommending Council increase spending on cycling and walking initiatives by $3 million over three years. This will be considered next year during Annual Plan discussions.
“We want everyone to be able to access our city in whatever way they choose to travel and I look forward to supporting more initiatives such as the Seaview Road underpass.”
