Welcome to the Machine - Opening 27 September
They’re everywhere – the kitchen, the lounge, on roads, in schools and workplaces. Where would you be without them?
‘Welcome to the Machine’ will show in a creative and interactive way how six simple machines can be combined to make
more complex machines. It will open to the public on 27 September and provide plenty of hands-on learning for the
children. Fun and interactive activities include a pinball machine, a giant lever on which you can lift a friend, an
Archimedes’ screw that winds balls into the air, the Strongulator that magnifies strength, and much more.
Begin your journey with interactive examples of the simple machines which include, the lever, wheel and axle, pulley,
inclined plane, wedge and screw, and learn the technology behind each of them. Visitors will also be encouraged to see
if any simple machines are utilised in our larger and more complex objects.
Children will take a hands-on approach, getting a chance to see each machine in action. Prepare to have your perceptions
changed the further you explore, as we take you through some of the most recognisable examples of simple machines
including a corset, ships block, scales and even a tennis racquet!
The bicycle as we know today is a great example of technological evolution, and uses levers in the form of pedals, and
the later addition of a chain and a wheel with sprockets gives us the final element of a contemporary bicycle. Compare
the 1930s-style racing bike of champion cyclist Wiremu Paratene and compare it to Olympic silver-medalist Hayden
Roulston.
You’ll also learn about Kiwi ‘No 8 wire’ innovation, with the story behind the ‘Kindling Cracker’, invented by the 2013
Fieldays young inventor of the year award winner, Ayla Hutchinson.
Innovation, invention and the ‘No 8’ wire attitude; an important day out for the next generation of young Kiwi minds!

Invention Nation School Holiday Experience
Have you ever solved a problem by inventing something useful? MOTAT’S September Holiday Experience will help you do just
that! Invention Nation will guide kids through the five stages of inventing; from the Idea, Design, Prototype, Testing,
to Refining. Find information about famous Kiwi inventors, our latest Exhibition - Welcome to the Machine - plus design
your own contraption in your very own Invention Journal! Each activity will have your brain buzzing and your creative
juices flowing. Kids will get the chance to:
• Sort It: you’re starving but sand has gotten into your only food. What invention will best sort out your food from the sand?
• Bridge It: you’re stranded and need to get to the other side, but there’s no way across. Can you invent a bridge to get you
there?
• Launch It: invent a launcher to fight through the targets!
• Grab It: there’s dangerous toxic acid. Grab it and move it out of harm’s way.
PLUS, using the classic tradition of the Rube Goldberg machine, help us build a massive marble moving machine! Construct
your tile and then add it to the wall to expand the machine. Be sure to keep checking throughout the holidays to see how
the machine is growing.
With plenty of challenges that will light up your imagination, MOTAT is the place to be these school holidays!

The MOTAT Story
The MOTAT Story Exhibition will highlight and celebrate the MOTAT's development over the last 50 years.
Join with us as we celebrate and share great memories and view photographs from years past, showing visitors and the
MOTAT team enjoying various milestones and activities.
The exhibition will also display a brief overview of MOTAT’s history and include:
• Displays of transport uniforms;
• Five decades of fashion;
• Institutional ephemera and iconic objects (such as a Yike Bike displayed alongside a Penny Farthing).
Join us as we celebrate the past 50 years and demonstrate the past and future forms of transport, technology and
illustrate the Museum’s new strategy which incorporates Kiwi innovation and ingenuity.

MOTAT Live
Experience MOTAT Live. See MOTAT come to life on the third Sunday of every month. MOTAT has some great things to see and
do, including steam train and Armoured Personnel Carrier rides. There are also other activities going on throughout the
day, including:
- Children’s bookbinding workshops
- Double decker ‘Big Ben’ tram (weather permitting) and Auckland heritage tram rides
- Horse and carriage rides (11am - 3pm)
- Lollymaking demonstrations
- Printing press workshop demonstrations
- Road Transport and Tram workshops
- Blacksmith working in the Forge
- Penny Farthing Rider
There is much to enjoy at MOTAT every Third Sunday of the month; so get the family together for a fun and educational
day out.
