Christchurch - West Melton Zone Committee focuses on Heathcote River / Ōpāwaho and groundwater
The Christchurch-West Melton Zone Committee will hold its monthly public meeting on Thursday 28 August from 5pm.
At the meeting the committee will hear from the Cashmere Stream Care Group about the challenges and opportunities the
important tributary of the Heathcote River / Ōpāwaho faces.
The committee will also be updated on the progress being made to better understand the Christchurch artesian aquifer
system and its recharge. Safeguarding groundwater quality and flows for multiple uses is a priority in the zone. The
report summarises the progress that has been made over the past year and looks at future work and the support required
from the zone committee.
Committee members will then be briefed on the progress Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury are making
to address stormwater challenges in the zone. Stormwater management has been identified as a critical barrier to
implementing the goals of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) in the zone and the committee has developed
recommendations to address this.
The committee will also receive an update from its Communications and Engagement Working Group, which is focussing on
how individuals can help to reduce their stormwater footprint.
The meeting will finish with a report from Environment Canterbury on the progress being made to implement the
on-the-ground actions outlined in its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management. This will include a
review of how the recommendations made in the ZIP align with the targets in the CWMS.
At Thursday’s meeting the committee will also elect a new chair as current Chair Ian Fox is stepping down from the
position.
