SCIRT traffic update - week starting 25 August, 2014
TIPS: The Four Avenues - Bealey, Fitzgerald, Deans and Moorhouse are reliable routes around the city.
Moorhouse is currently reduced to two lanes eastbound Antigua to Montreal St so expect delays peak hours. Montreal St
intersection is a pinch point but should be back to two lanes soon.
For north/south travel inside the city’s Four Aves, Durham St and Montreal St have less roadworks than the east side
one-ways, Barbadoes and Madras.

Central City - new work
Moorhouse Ave – three areas of work
Moorhouse Ave – Antigua to Montreal St reduced to two lanes, one cycle lane
Moorhouse Ave’s fresh water pipe is being repaired by the Downer team. The road shoulder, footpath and one lane are
taken out between Antigua and Montreal Streets for about two weeks. Expect delays at peak hours travelling east on Moorhouse from Lincoln Road/ Hagley Ave corner.
Moorhouse Ave – westbound parking reduction from 25 August
From 25 August, the Downer fresh water pipe crew will set up on the south side of Moorhouse, Durham St back to Antigua.
Parking will be affected in the first week.
Moorhouse Ave – one lane at night westwards drivers
Be on the lookout at night for another week of work along the south side of Moorhouse Ave. Drivers going towards Hagley
Park from Pilgrim Place (between Colombo and Manchester) to Antigua St will be restricted to just one lane for McConnell Dowell’s pipe-lining at night.
Durham St – rescheduling to Thursday, 28 August to 5 September
This work, on lateral pipes and redundant manholes along Durham St North and in the Peterborough/ Durham intersection,
was advertised to take place in the week starting 18 August. It has had to be rescheduled to start 28 August.
Manchester St – Pak ‘n Save customers drive in off Moorhouse
Manchester St kerb and channel is being replaced from Moorhouse Ave to Dundas St over the next two weeks. Two-way road
lanes will be maintained but there will be no parking outside Pak ‘n Save on Manchester. Shoppers should drive in off Moorhouse to avoid congestion around the site.
Colombo St and Armagh St – Victoria Square, access New Regent St/ Cathedral Junction
If you are coming into New Regent St or Cathedral Junction (which runs from Gloucester St through to Worcester St, along the tram tracks), use Manchester St.
•Colombo St at Armagh (Victoria Square) is closed to all traffic except drivers going east on Armagh St who can turn
left/ north into Colombo.
Victoria St – week starting Thursday, 28 August
Watch out for the crew working on laterals and CCTV (filming inside pipes) investigation work for one week from
Thursday, 28 August. There will be one full evening of night work.
Central City - ongoing work
Hereford St, from the river/ Oxford Tce to Colombo St
Hereford St will, be one-way, eastbound, for three more weeks past the Ibis Hotel as lateral wastewater pipes are
replaced.
Antigua St, one-way between Halkett and St Asaph St
Antigua St will be one-way, north of Halkett St. Two-way traffic will be restored to the block north of Moorhouse
Friday, 22 August.
St Asaph St between Madras/ CPIT corner and Manchester – lane reductions
SCIRT’s Downer crew is repairing badly damaged laterals by trenching from the main pipe in the middle of the road to the
property boundary. Lanes are reduced through this block.
Allen St, opposite CPIT, one way only - Madras Street west to Manchester St
Downer is repairing the south side laterals, hence Allen St is westwards only towards Manchester St.
Kilmore St
Kilmore St has lane closures between Madras and Colombo Streets for road reconstruction and storm water repairs, up
until December.
Peterborough St
The road will be closed to through traffic between Madras and Colombo St with full access for residents and businesses. For businesses, there is one-way eastbound traffic flow, enter from Manchester St.
Madras Street (one-way north)
Madras Street is reduced to one lane in more than one place between Moorhouse and Bealey Ave. Expect delays.
Barbadoes St (one-way south)
Barbadoes St has lane closures for final road reconstruction from south of Bealey Ave/ Melrose St to the river. There is
also a lane drop in the block between Cashel and Lichfield Streets.
Hagley Ave (near netball courts) and side streets - parking heads-up
Night works between 6pm and 6am, with no parking on the netball court side.

Outside the Four Aves
Main Road Redcliffs, closing for a week 25 August
Sumner/ Redcliffs drivers will be detoured onto Beachville Road and Celia St for one week from 25 August. The newly
installed pressure pipe needs to be tested and commissioned.
Bromley Road at Keighleys Road closure
Bromley Road at the Keighleys Road intersection will be closed to traffic for about two weeks from Monday, 25 August. Please take care around Kawau Crescent and Bromley School.
Edmond St, Linwood, two week closure
Edmond St, off Aldwins Road will be closed to traffic for two weeks from Friday, 22 August. Drivers won’t be able to
turn onto Edmond St from Aldwins Road, either direction.
Aldwins Road, Linwood, at Marlborough St
Marlborough St, Linwood, between Aldwins Road and Havelock St is closed to traffic for about three weeks. This has
reduced Aldwins Road to one lane for up to five days, northbound side of the road. Aldwins Road will be back to two
lanes northbound this weekend at Marlborough St.
North Avon Road, Richmond, two week closure coming up
North Avon Road is closed to traffic between North Parade and Petrie St as early as Wednesday 27 August, for about two weeks.
Keyes Road/ Bowhill Road, North New Brighton, intersection closed for two more weeks
This intersection is closed for two more weeks while the roundabout is reconstructed. Drivers can take Marine Parade or
Bower Avenue instead of Keyes Road to get around in New Brighton. The dairy on Bowhill Road and the Frame n Copy shop on Keyes Road are open. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/5406
St Andrews Hill Road closed to uphill traffic
SCIRT’s Downer team is carrying out repairs to a retaining wall near the bottom of St Andrews Hill Road. The road will
be reduced to one lane around the worksite and will be closed to uphill traffic for another week. Detours will be in
place via Bridle Path Road and Mt Pleasant Road.
Beckenham – Norwood St
Norwood St is closed to through traffic between Fisher Ave and Sandwich Road for another week.
Owles Terrace, New Brighton – road closure for eight months
Owles Terrace from the Seaview Road roundabout to just south of Beresford St is closed to drivers for around eight
months. Fulton Hogan will be installing a new water main, storm water main and wastewater pipe. A detour is in place
along Seaview Road, Hardy and Collingwood Streets.
Worcester St, between Woodham Road and Dacre St, Linwood
This part of Worcester St is closed to traffic for around a month. Detours are in place.
Aranui/ Wainoni update – changes in traffic management coming
• Shortland St, between Wainoni and Pages Roads, is one-way east ie towards Pages.
• Breezes Road is one way southbound until Tuesday, 26 August, between Lenton St and Cuthberts Road as City Care and
Fletcher Construction install the new vacuum wastewater system.
•City Care’s work from Lenton St to Rowses Road will continue until late September, maintaining the one-way on this
block.
•Fletcher’s work from Rowses Road to Cuthberts Road will have traffic lights installed in two stages to enable two-way
traffic.
• From 22 August to 26 August (Friday to Tuesday), the first stage of lights will be installed on Breezes Road as it
approaches Cuthberts Road from the south side (Bridge St bridge roundabout/ Dyers Road).
• From 27 August (next Wednesday) to 7 September, traffic lights will also be used on the Rowses Road to Cuthberts Road
section of Breezes Road extending the two-way traffic.
Bromley – Maces Road
Maces Road is southbound only from St Johns St to Woburn St for two more weeks. The north-west bound detour is either
via Wickham/ Tanya and Newton Streets or Linwood Ave and St Johns St.
Upcoming work - Mt Pleasant
Soleares Ave reopening September, Mt Pleasant Road closing
Soleares Ave, Mt Pleasant will reopen to traffic soon. The goal is 1 September after ten months closure for wall
stabilisation and a bridge-type build above the road.
As McCormacks Bay Road is one way, eastbound/ towards Redcliffs, drivers using Soleares Ave to leave Mt Pleasant will
have to go around McCormacks Bay Road to Redcliffs and the causeway. Drivers coming onto the hill via Soleares Ave turn
off Main Road onto McCormacks Bay Road. Fulton Hogan is aiming to reopen the first part of McCormacks Bay Road, near the farmers market/ community centre, to
two-way traffic in the New Year.
At the same time as Soleares Ave reopens, Mt Pleasant Road retaining wall work can then begin. This will close that road
to traffic near Seamount Terrace. It is currently one-lane around the collapsed wall.
Celebration 31 August Lyttelton Tunnel
Lyttelton Tunnel open to foot-power, three hours Sunday, 31 August, 9.30 am to 12.20 pm
If you are planning on visiting Lyttelton Sunday morning, 31 August, be prepared to park and walk, scoot, cycle or
skateboard through the tunnel. NZTA is celebrating the road tunnel’s 50 year birthday from 1964, the new tunnel control
building is complete and SCIRT’s Horotane overpass twin bridges are rebuilt and will both be open.
