Free computers for Rotorua library means free internet for library users
Rotorua Library director Jane Gilbert looks on as RDC chief executive Geoff Williams signs an agreement to bring
Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa programme to library.
Rotorua District Council (RDC) is joining forces with National Library of New Zealand to bring free internet services to
all Rotorua Library users.
Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa (APNK) is an initiative developed by the national library in partnership with public
libraries to provide free computing equipment and internet access to communities.
RDC chief executive Geoff Williams, Rotorua Library director Jane Gilbert, and library staff signed an official
agreement yesterday (14 August) to bring the programme to Rotorua Library.
As part of the initiative the library will be provided with 20 computers at no cost, replacing existing coin-operated
computers. Library members and visitors will then be able to use the computers located throughout the library to access
the internet free of charge.
Mrs Gilbert said the service is a significant and exciting step forward for the library and for the whole Rotorua
community. She acknowledged APNK and the national library for making the opportunity available to public libraries
across the country.
“This is quite a moment for us here in Rotorua. It signals a new era for our library services and for public libraries
nationally. Libraries are working hard to further their positions as community hubs, and this development moves us
closer to that goal.”
Mr Williams commended the Rotorua Library team on its willingness to embrace innovation and their passion to improve
service to library patrons.
He said building a ‘connected’ community was a key aim of the district’s Rotorua 2030 Resilient Communities goal.
“Not only will this agreement substantially benefit users of the library, but it is also a prime example of council’s
commitment to working collaboratively with our individual services.”
The new computer equipment and improved internet access will be available for public use in six to eight weeks.
