Warning for dog owners

Warning for dog owners

Animal Control Officer Aaron Thornton says Council has been made aware that two dogs may have been poisoned. Both dogs presented with the same symptoms prior to death, which were vomiting and very lethargic. The Vet who treated one of the dogs strongly suspects poisoning, however nothing has been confirmed. Both dogs had been on the Bridal Track, behind Victoria Esplanade, within the last 24 hours prior to their death.

There is no proof poisoning has occurred, however Palmerston North City Council’s Animal Control Team want to make the public aware that it is possible and that dog owners should take necessary precautions.

“It is concerning,” says Aaron. “We have alerted the police, Horizons Regional Council, the SPCA and local veterinarians.”

“We are asking dog owners to take particular care. The Bridal Path, behind the Esplanade, is a lead only area, using a lead will help prevent your dog from rummaging which will help keep them safe. And, for the time being it would be wise to keep your dog on a lead along the entire Bridal Path.”

Aaron says there was a similar possible poisoning case in the city last September when a dog also had to be put down.

If you see any suspicious behaviour then you should contact the police.
